Cooperativa Agraria Industrial Naranjillo Ltda is a cacao & coffee cooperative that spreads its operations over three Peruvian rainforest provinces (San Martin, Huanuco and Ucayali) around Cordillera Azul National Park. With over 50 years in operation, Naranjillo has been a key actor in the post-conflict development of the region, supporting peaceful, legal livelihoods in an area that has a history of illegal coca production, narco traffic and armed conflict. The cooperative collection centres and the processing facilities for cacao and coffee have the capacity to process and add value to 9,000 tons of cacao and 3,500 of coffee, respectively.
Naranjillo has approximately 5,000 members, all smallholder cacao and coffee producers, organised in 51 producer groups, each of which has a delegate that sits on the general assembly of the Cooperative.
Prior to investment Naranjillo’s processing plant were not operating efficiently and this meant the cooperative’s members were forced to sell unprocessed products to intermediaries, greatly reducing their income. Althelia’s investment in Naranjillo supports the substantial restructuring of the financial, administrative and commercial operations of the organisation, and increases the productivity in both the processing operations as well as increasing productivity and production at the farms level through better agricultural practices and organic certification. Upon full implementation, this will provide an opportunity for the smallholder members to access to their fair share along the cacao and coffee value chains, increasing their incomes and reducing the pressure on the forest where cacao and coffee are grown.
Althelia is syndicating with a group of international social lenders with great experience in smallholder agriculture financing, technical assistance providers and cooperation agencies in order to achieve a successful restructuring and consolidation of Naranjillo so the Cooperative become a tool for social development and environmental conservation around Cordillera Azul landscape in benefit of cocoa and coffee farmers.
